Professor Archimedes (initially misnamed A(r)chimeemees by Digit[1]) is an ally of of Motherboard and the CyberSquad. He debuted in "Eureeka".

History[]

Little is known about the history between Dr. Marbles and Professor Archimedes although the two seem to have a close working relationship. In "Eureeka", Archimedes has just finished building a replica of Motherboard's Encryptor Chip, but due to fear of Hacker's henchmen retreats into 2-dimensions, accidentally causing the chip to disappear form his possession. He is reference by name in "Clock Like An Egyptian" where Dr. Marbles remarks how the Encryptor Chip is exactly where he'd said it would be.

He later appears in "Starlight Night", having taken on the responsibility of making sure the lights go on. He is then kidnapped by Hacker who is trying to stop the holiday and later rescued by the Cybersquad.

Personality[]

In his first appearance, Professor Archimedes shows a determination to protect the new Encryptor Chip from Hacker, and puts full trust in his two assistants to pull him back into the third dimension.

In his next appearance, he is shown to be somewhat socially awkward and mild-mannered, although principled and idealistic at the same time. After being kidnapped by Hacker, he makes several attempts to convince him to act for good. Archimedes seems to show more patience with him than either Dr. Marbles or Digit, possibly since he's encountered Hacker on fewer occasions.

Physical appearance[]

The professor is turquoise colored and resembles a pyramid. He has bright red hair at the peak of his head and around his ears, as well as matching red eyebrows. There is a yellow magnifying glass hanging from the top of his head that is typically at eye level. His facial features resemble Hacker's, which may imply Marbles was inspired by him during Hacker's creation.

Name origin and cultural references[]

Professor Archimedes is likely named after Archimedes of Syracuse[2], a Greek mathematician and scientist whose work became influential in the Renaissance[3].

A famous story about the historical Archimedes is that, while he was bathing, he had an epiphany about how to measure the displacement of water. He was so excited that he ran through the streets without his clothes, yelling "Eureka!" (Ancient Greek: εὕρηκα heúrēka, "I have found it"). The names of cybersite Eureeka and its debut episode are a nod to this story.

Furthermore, the tyrant Hieronymus of Syracuse, who Hieronymous Hacker is likely named after, was alive at the same time as the historical Archimedes. Hacker and Professor Archimedes appear to share design elements such as their facial features. This may be because Hieronymus's grandfather, Hiero II, was a blood relative of Archimedes of Syracuse, according to Plutarch's Parallel Lives.

Trivia[]

  • Although in order of broadcast, "Eureka" is episode 11, the continuity implies it comes before episode 4, "Clock Like An Egyptian" and that the chip mentioned is the same one Archimedes loses in his debut episode.
  • Hacker's nickname for him is "Arky".
  • It is possible he is related to Sleight O'Hand as they are the only two characters with Irish accents and are both based on shapes. This also means that Archimedes is also from Poddleville.
