Maya is a child character in the For Real segment "Bianca on the Run."
She meets Bianca when she attends a marathon to keep track of how many numbers. Bianca attempts tally marks, but unfortunately, as Maya points out, there would be over nine tally marks in any latter column. Then, as for some sort of clock for counting, the maximum number is 999,999.
Therefore, Bianca shows her an abacus (she knows what it's called) that has colored beads and can get to the millions. At first, Bianca uses it, but when she finds a banana peel, she gets in the way to pick it up, but decides to run.
Maya takes over on the abacus, but by the time Bianca returns, Maya has left for dinner with her mother, leaving a note and the abacus, proving the place value.
Maya's Note to Bianca
I counted all the runners with my mom. We had to go home for dinner. We counted 32,573. Your abacus worked great. You ran like a gazelle! I think you're cool.
